Following the success of our 6th annual World TB Day at the University of British Columbia, we wish to thank our main sponsor, the TB Vets Charitable Foundation. We hope to announce the 2016 edition of this event next winter!
2015 World TB day
March 24 at UBC – March 25 at Library Square
UBC World TB Day is designed to raise awareness about tuberculosis. TB remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of over 1 million people each year. In Canada, the incidence of TB is particularly high among First Nations people. In Vancouver, TB is an ongoing concern in the Downtown Eastside.
March 24th UBC Symposium and Keynote Address: This event is directed at researchers in the field of microbiology and immunology. This year we present an exciting program with short seminars on topics that expand from basic science to clinical aspects of the management of the disease at the BC Center for Disease Control (BCCDC) and with a keynote address by Dr. Bill Jacobs who is professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and a member of the National Academy of Science. His research has led to advances in the genetic manipulations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) allowing for the generation of mutant strains, which has revolutionized the field of TB research. His current research, which focuses on the persistence of Mtb as well as the development of novel diagnostic tests for drug resistant strains, tackles two of the most challenging issues in the treatment and eradication of TB infection.
